On 5 and 6 May 2026, Olivier Gupta, Director General of ASNR and Vice-President of WENRA, and Luc Chanial, International Adviser to the Executive Committee, attended the plenary meeting of WENRA, the association of heads of European nuclear safety authorities.

Gathered in Stockholm (Sweden) under the chairmanship of Petteri Tiippana, Director General of the Finnish Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), the members of WENRA discussed several important issues, including:

  • the possible topics for the 3rd thematic peer review exercise to be conducted under the revised European Directive 2009/71/Euratom of 2014, and the prioritisation work to be carried out by WENRA in advance of the selection of the review topic at the ENSREG plenary meeting in December 2026.
  • the possibility of carrying out joint reactor safety assessments, and the conditions under which an assessment of a reactor model conducted by a given safety authority - whether or not a member of WENRA - might be taken into account by one or more WENRA members.
  • the work that may be undertaken between PAA, the Polish nuclear safety authority, and certain WENRA counterparts interested in assessing the AP1000 reactor model, for which an initial application for a construction licence has been submitted in Poland - the first such application in Europe.
  • the challenges faced by nuclear safety authorities in relation to recruitment, skills management and career development.
  • the use of nuclear power to propel merchant ships, including a discussion on how WENRA members might contribute to the work being carried out within the International Maritime Organization, and the decision to publish a WENRA position paper on the associated issues, based on a draft prepared by ASNR.

In addition, WENRA working groups reported on their respective activities. The next meeting will be hosted in early November in Spain by the CSN, the Spanish Nuclear Safety Authority.
