From 14 to 16 January 2026, the ASNR participated in the second progress meeting and steering committee, which was held in Pretoria, South Africa. The ASNR is part of the consortium implementing a four-year project (December 2024 to December 2028) aimed at strengthening nuclear safety regulatory capacity in Africa. The meetings involved six African countries and aimed to analyse the progress made during the project’s first year and define and validate the 2026 action plan.

Funded by the European Commission under the European Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation, the project is coordinated by Expertise France and managed technically by the ASNR. The project involves a consortium of six European organisations (ASNR, Bel-V (Belgium), CSN (Spain), STUK (Finland), SUJB (Czech Republic) and Bureau Veritas (France)) working for the benefit of six African regulators: ENRRA (Egypt), NRA (Ghana), KNRA (Kenya), AMSSNuR (Morocco), NNRA (Nigeria) and NNR (South Africa).

The project’s primary goal is to promote a safety culture and implement high standards and practices in nuclear safety and radiation protection across the African continent, for the benefit of the public and the environment. The project addresses six areas of activity:

  • Strengthening the capacity to assess radiation protection systems
  • Managing spent fuel and radioactive waste
  • Improving safety assessment capabilities
  • Harmonising regulations applicable to nuclear facilities and integrating international best practices
  • Improving public information (led by the ASNR)
  • Emergency preparedness and response (led by the ASNR)
  • Strengthening nuclear safety and radiation protection monitoring capabilities
