Bilateral meeting with Germany
The 52nd meeting of the Franco-German Commission for the Safety of Nuclear Installations was held in Munich (Germany) on 1 and 2 July 2026, chaired by Claudia Engelhardt, Head of the Radiation Protection Directorate at the BMUKN (Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Klimaschutz, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit), and Geraldine Pina, Commissioner of the ASNR.
The ASNR delegation met with its counterparts from BMUKN and BASE (the Federal Office for the Safe Management of Nuclear Waste), as well as representatives of the safety authorities of the Länder of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, and a representative of GRS, BMUKN’s technical support organization.
Discussions focused on current events and key issues in both countries: emergency preparedness, monitoring of nuclear power plants near the Franco-German border, nuclear waste management, and the status of decommissioning projects. Nuclear fusion, a subject of growing mutual interest to France and Germany, was also discussed.
Following the meeting, a tour of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz reactor was conducted. Also known as FRM II (Forschungsreaktor München II), this high-flux research reactor is designed to produce neutrons for scientific research purposes.
The discussions confirmed the shared interest in close cooperation to address the common challenges of nuclear safety and radiation protection, in a constantly evolving international context. They also highlighted the shared commitment to pursuing an open and constructive dialogue, based on the sharing of experience and mutual enrichment. Both parties will continue their exchanges on lessons learnt regarding the operation and decommissioning of facilities, as well as on the insights and challenges associated with new technologies.
The next Franco-German Commission will be held in France in 2027.
