On 6 October 2025, ASNR concluded the three-year INSC project supporting the Iraqi Radiation Protection Centre in strengthening its regulatory framework for radioactive waste management. Conducted with Expertise France and Andra, and funded by the European Commission, the project aimed to align Iraq’s practices with international standards in nuclear safety and radioactive waste management.

With a budget of €1.86 million, the project focused on three priorities:

  • improving regulations for radioactive waste storage facilities
  • enhancing licence management for disposal facilities
  • strengthening regulatory oversight in nuclear safety.

Activities included technical training, workshops, regulatory reviews, and on-site visits, providing practical support and building local capacity.

The project’s successful completion marks a key milestone for ASNR’s international engagement and lays the groundwork for future cooperation under the next INSC programme (2028–2034), potentially extending support to additional countries.
